Obstructive sleep apnoea is a chronic disorder in which intermittent and repeated upper-airway collapse during sleep leads to irregular breathing and repeated awakening at night. It is a serious condition since the resulting daytime sleepiness impairs judgement and increases the risk of accidents. There is also evidence that obstructive sleep apnoea increases the likelihood of high blood pressure, which in turn raises a person’s risk of heart attack or stroke1.
